In 1925, Frederick Rentschler had a concept for a more powerful, lighter weight engine design; and, in a brilliant move, he, along with his chief engineer George Mead, contracted with the Pratt & Whitney Machine Tool company to develop it, as they were most well known as the ‘father’ of machine tool accuracy, and for their ability to achieve true interchangeability of parts. On Christmas Eve, the first of the long line of radial engines was
completed. Frederick’s wife, Faye, suggested the name ‘Wasp’, and, American aviation took a great leap forward in the reliability and performance of aircraft engines, which would have a significant  impact during World War II, and for the growth of air transportation. The original R-1340, as this kit is based on, developed 425hp, which was impressive for the period and led to many new aircraft designs, as airframes were typically developed around powerplants. A total production of almost 35,000 engines had been built before the piston engines gave way to the turbine engines, which are still manufactured today under the renowned and well-respected name of Pratt & Whitney.

Use of Name "Pratt & Whitney" is under license from Pratt & Whitney, a United Technologies Company.
